A new study finds that a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction may not be as safe as it was before Viagra came on the market, the results of an analysis of data from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The study, funded by Pfizer Inc., of Indianapolis, is designed to look at the safety of a drug used for a period of two years, when Viagra was on the market. Researchers looked at data from 3,743 patients with erectile dysfunction who were randomly assigned to take one of two drugs, either Viagra or Cialis, to treat their symptoms. The study did not find any differences in the side effects of the drugs.
The drugs, which were originally tested in research trials in which the drugs were used to treat erectile dysfunction, were no longer available in the US in 2005. Viagra has been the subject of an investigation by the FDA in 2008, and the drug's manufacturer, Bayer AG, has since announced it would stop marketing the drug in the US.
However, the results of the study show that a lower dose of Viagra (10 mg) is safe and well-tolerated compared to a higher dose of Cialis (20 mg).
"The evidence suggests that when used as directed, the drug can be used safely for up to 36 hours for most men," said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, lead author of the study, which was funded by Pfizer, which is the maker of Viagra.
In the US, the FDA has only approved a small number of drugs, but studies show that up to 80 percent of men will not take them.
"The safety of drugs like Viagra has not been studied in the US and has not been approved by the FDA in the US," Mermin added.
Dr. Peter Kramer, chief medical officer at Pfizer, said that the study found no differences in side effects between the drugs. "There are no clinically significant adverse events," he said.
"Pfizer's data is consistent with the well-established safety of sildenafil citrate. Sildenafil is the same drug used to treat pulmonary hypertension and benign prostatic hypertrophy. It has not been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction."
The study did not find any differences in the side effects of Cialis, Viagra or Viagra with Viagra.
In another study of Viagra and Cialis, Pfizer said it has studied Viagra and Cialis in more than 100 patients for years, and found no differences between the two.
Peter Kramer, chief medical officer of Pfizer, said the study did not find that the drugs interact differently in the body.
"There are no adverse effects on the gastrointestinal system of any of the drugs used for erectile dysfunction," he said. "The drug can only be taken by patients who already have erectile dysfunction.
In a separate study of the drugs used for erectile dysfunction, Pfizer said that the drugs are only used to treat pulmonary hypertension and benign prostatic hypertrophy.
